“No New Coal in the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains” Petition Approved
The petitioner is singer-songwriter Corb Lund, yes, THAT Corb Lund.
The petition is approved by Elections Alberta, However, it is NOT issued.
Signature collection cannot begin until the petition is ISSUED.
It reads as
"WHEREAS the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains represent an area of watersheds and landscapes that are essential sources of clean water for Alberta's drinking and food population.
WHEREAS coal mining in the Eastern Slopes may jeopardize those sources of water.
WHEREAS companies continue to pursue approvals and permits for new coal mines and expansions of existing coal mines within the Eastern Slopes, which includes the proposed Grassy Mountain Project of Northback Holdings Inc. and Blackstone Project of Black Eagle/Valory.
WHEREAS the Government of Alberta defines the area of the Eastern Slopes in its Eastern Slopes Policy of 1977 (revised 1984 and 2023).
WHEREAS the legislative proposal shall be:
The Government of Alberta shall prohibit by law any and all new coal mining activities, including new approvals and permits within the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains."
