60th annual Jam Pail Bonspiel
(From COMH Instagram page)
Times TBA
Registration is now open for the Jam Pail Bonspiel, which turns 60 in 2025. The Diamond Jubilee edition of Medicine Hat’s longest running sporting event is set for Wednesday, February 19 and Thursday, February 20 at the Kinplex. The registration deadline is Monday, February 10, 2025.
Kinplex I will be converted into 13 curling sheets and will welcome Grades 3 to 6 students from all over the city. The event typically begins around 5 p.m. each day. However, the event schedule and start time will depend on registration numbers. Each team is guaranteed three games.
The bonspiel was originally created to provide students with an activity held during Teacher’s Convention which focused on participation, sport, and fun. For many, it has historically been their first introduction to the sport. In the early years of the Jam Pail Bonspiel, tin pails used for storing jam were filled with water and frozen and used as curling rocks, which is how it got its name.
“As we celebrate this incredible 60-year milestone, we’re excited to honour the history of the Jam Pail Bonspiel by continuing to focus on those three key elements – participation, sport, and fun,” said Rebecca Hirsch, Recreation Program Coordinator.
This year, the City has introduced an ‘Open/All ages’ category during Wednesday’s session to match the all ages category offered annually on Thursdays. This provides an additional opportunity for all jam pail enthusiasts to participate.
Jam Pail Bonspiel categories
February 19 - Grades 3-4 and Open/All ages
February 20 - Grades 5-6 and Open/All ages
“It’s a wonderful way to bring people together and celebrate a tradition that has connected generations. We can’t wait to see you at the rink,” added Hirsch.

Lunar New Year
Stunning Stella - the Albino Ball Python
From the Canadian Encyclopedia
“The Lunar New Year — also known as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year, Tet for Vietnamese Canadians, or Solnal for Korean Canadians — is celebrated in Canada and several other countries. It is one of the largest celebrations for Canada’s Chinese population, it is also celebrated by Canadians from Vietnam, Korea and Southeast Asia. Although it is not a statutory holiday in Canada, many Asian Canadian businesses are closed or have reduced hours for the occasion. Since 1 June 2016, this celebration has been recognized as an official holiday in Canada.”

Midnight Madness
Midnight Madness is a yearly event that usually takes place a week before Black Friday to encourage people to shop early and support the local shops and owners within the downtown core. Come on down and enjoy all that downtown has to offer with live entertainment, giveaways, retail sales & specials, food and beverage offerings from your favorite local hot spots, a petting zoo, buskers, and so much more. We can't wait to see you for another year of Midnight Madness, November 22nd in beautiful Downtown Medicine Hat!

Midnight Madness at Trex Space
TREX Space is excited to support and showcase local artists at this year’s Downtown Midnight Madness on November 22 from 4 PM until Midnight. Join us for an opening reception of "From Life to Paper, Paper to Life II".
This group exhibition features new works by 14 members of the Strathcona Art Studios. This group meets twice a week at the Veiner Centre and has a focus on watercolour painting. Delight in unique depictions of landscapes, nature, city views and more rendered by local talent.
Several artists will be in attendance for the event, and complimentary light refreshments will be available.
Visitors can also shop our Fine Art Market featuring vendors from the Strathcona Art Studios. We can’t wait to see you at our favourite event of the year!
