Mayor Clark’s Response
MAYOR CLARK RESPONSE TO COURT OF KING’S BENCH RULING IN THE JUDICIAL REVIEW
August 26, 2024 - I am very pleased that our Superior Court restored my powers, duties and salary -
finding that these sanctions were overwhelmingly disproportionate to the public questions I raised
during our August 21, 2023 council meeting.
I also want to express my sincere gratitude to all of my supporters through this process!
I will be seeking assistance from the court to cover my legal costs. In the meantime, I plan to
continue to work with council to put this matter fully behind us and get on with attending to the
business of the great city of Medicine Hat, which is what we were all elected to do.
I believe that all parties involved, including myself, have learned valuable lessons from this
experience. For example, in June, council voted unanimously to direct administration to establish
an Integrity Commissioner that would deal with Code of Conduct complaints and provide members
of council with advice in relation to Code of Conduct compliance. This as a huge step in the right
direction.
However, I would continue to urge the Provincial Government to support the success of Alberta
municipal governments, the level of government closest to Albertans, by creating an independent
office of Municipal Integrity and Ethics Commissioner.
