Walsh gas station owner sentenced for uttering threats

A gas station owner that has been at the centre of several conflicts in Walsh has been sentenced to six-months house arrest followed by a year of probation and curfew.

Anwar Kamaran, 47, was convicted at trial late last year on two charges of uttering threats against two brothers as well as breaching conditions while on probation from a conviction relating to a 2019 assault at a neighbouring service station.

The court heard Kamaran was driving on the Trans-Canada Highway between Walsh and Irvine when he came across two brothers bailing grass next to the road on Aug. 3, 2023. The man then circled around and threatened to kill the two men – one who was slightly younger than 18 at the time – and harm their mother. He was found guilty of two charges of uttering threats related to that offence.

Kamaran garnered an additional conviction for breaching conditions as he was on release following serving an eight-month jail sentence followed by two years probation for a assault conviction. That conviction was related to an assault on a neighbouring gas station owner in Walsh.

The 47-year-old’s conditional sentence involves several dozen conditions including to have no contact with four members of one family – including the two brothers – as well as another named individual. He is also required to keep the peace, maintain at least 50 metre distance from the named individuals, not to possess any prohibited weapons, alcohol or cannabis. It will also require Kamaran be under house arrest for six-months with exceptions for work and counselling.

His probation conditions mirror those of the conditional sentence, though, the house arrest portion will change to a nightly curfew.
