Press release from the City of Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat is pleased to announce that following a fulsome recruitment process, a new Managing Director of Public Services has been selected. Joseph Hutter has accepted the position and will officially commence in the role in City Hall on October 1.

Hutter holds a Master of Public Policy from the University of Calgary and is joining the City of Medicine Hat from the Town of Nobleford, where he has served as the chief administrative officer since April of 2021. Prior to that, he was the legislative clerk with Cardston County from 2017-2021. With ample experience in managing the day-to-day operations of a municipality, Hutter has worked closely with both administration and elected officials. In previous roles he was responsible for the establishment of property tax rates as well as the creation and monitoring of annual capital and operating budgets, overseeing capital projects, monitoring Council’s strategic plan to ensure alignment, and connecting and liaising with community stakeholders. He is also a Certified Local Government Manager, having completed the National Certificate in Local Authority Administration I and II programs from the University of Alberta. In addition, he is currently continuing his public service education with the Executive Certificate in Municipal Leadership program from the University of Alberta.

“We are excited to have Joe on board,” says Ann Mitchell, City Manager. “The public services portfolio is so important to our community, and Joe is keen to bring his ideas and passion to Medicine Hat.”

Hutter will replace Brian Stauth, who has served in the role for the last 18 months following a lengthy career with Medicine Hat’s Fire and Emergency Services department, with his final 11 years of service as chief before moving to the managing director role.

“Brian’s service to this community can’t be overstated,” added Mitchell. “His leadership in both City Hall and with Fire and Emergency Services has benefitted our community in countless ways. I want to publicly acknowledge how grateful I am for his support and congratulate him on a wonderful career in public service.”

Stauth will stay on with the City until the end of 2024 to wrap up some of the projects that he has been leading during his time as managing director.

Hutter shared his thoughts on joining the City of Medicine Hat.

"I am honoured and thrilled to continue my public service career with the City of Medicine Hat. Having grown up in the region, I've spent a considerable amount of time in the city, and it has always been a place that I had hoped to return to. The opportunity to raise my family in Medicine Hat is very exciting, and I can't wait to get started with the team."

This is a breaking story.
