The city is launching its non-profit capital grant program, the Public Services Committee heard Monday.

Development of the program was sparked by a notice of motion from Coun. Ramona Robins in February 2024 which sought to formulate a funding model for local non-profits.

“Having had a few of those non-profit agencies come forward and request funds for different reasons, I just thought that it would be something we should consider having a framework and criteria and perhaps set aside some grant money for,” said Robins last year.

The committee heard that framework and criteria process for capital projects has now been completed and an application for non-profits will be available later this week on the city’s website.

Several non-profit agencies have presented to council requesting funding for capital projects including the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter and Exhibition & Stampede.

City seeking public input on arts, heritage and entertainment framework

The city is seeking a diverse group of a dozen Hatters to help develop the future of arts and culture in the municipality.

The Arts, Heritage and Entertainment Plan (AHEP) was released last year with goals to strengthen ties with local organizations, increase participation and diversify cultural activities.

Aaron Nelson, manager of community connections, said the plan was developed with engagement from 23 community groups, more than 500 responses from a survey along with hearing from 150 residents during direct engagement sessions.

“We will be successful when we are talking to people that we don’t know, when we’re reaching those people maybe we didn’t reach before,” said Nelson.

He added the AHEP focus group is seeking 12 members to, “review plans and data, provide their wisdom and insights as to how the community can activate this plan.”

Volunteers will be required to attend four meetings over the year.

The application can be found on the city’s website.
