For the second time this year, a Medicine Hat police officer is facing criminal charges.
City police announced Thursday that Const. Chan Lee is facing two allegations of assault with a weapon stemming from a Jan. 26 incident.
MHPS say Lee remains on duty and is currently performing administrative duties.
Despite there being no public complaint, an investigation was initiated following MHPS Chief Allan Murphy notifying the provincial Ministry of Public Safety of the incident, according to local police citing sec. 46.1 of the Police Act.
That Police Act section also requires the city’s police commission to be notified but the MHPS release does not indicate whether that was done as well.
The release does not mention how many victims were involved in the incident.
Lee was released on a promise to appear at his court date on Nov. 25.
MHPS say as Lee’s matters are now before the court, they will not be commenting regarding charges at this time.
The charges come in the wake of Edmonton police arresting and charging Const. Noel Darr with obstructing justice in July.
Darr is accused of attempting to, “dissuade witnesses by threats, bribes or other corrupt means from giving evidence,” according to court documents.
Those allegations stem from incidents which occurred between Feb. 1, 2022 and Nov. 30, 2023.
Darr is also a key figure in former MHPS chief Mike Worden’s $1.85 million lawsuit against the city alleging the constable was involved in a smear campaign which led to his resignation.
