The Great Grad Gown Grift

Momma bear ain’t havin’ it.

A Medicine Hat mother says she paid in full last September for her daughter’s graduation dress from *Magic Moments Bridal*—but with graduation season now here, the dress has still not arrived, leaving her without answers.

After speaking with a protected industry source, Medicine Hat Owl has learned that formalwear retailers typically ship high-value dresses like grad and wedding gowns with insurance and tracking. However, customers allege that store owner Karla Clute has been unable to provide proof that orders have been shipped.

The situation has gained significant attention online, with a video posted by the concerned mother being shared over 300 times and amassing more than 180,000 views on Facebook. The outcry has sparked a grassroots movement, with affected families banding together in online communities. Some are offering previously loved grad dresses to those in need, while others are sharing alternative retailers.

In response, a bridal shop in Lethbridge has stepped in, helping disappointed Magic Moments customers connect directly with designers to secure their dresses—provided they pay again. Meanwhile, some frustrated buyers have contacted their credit card companies, alleging that Clute never intended to fulfill orders, raising concerns of possible fraud or theft.

As graduation events approach, families are left scrambling for solutions while questions linger about the whereabouts of their paid-for dresses.
