Alberta’s Electoral Boundaries Commission will be making a stop in Medicine Hat Friday as the statutory body seeks to figure out where to fit in an additional two legislature seats.

The public will be welcome to make submissions at the public hearing taking place but are asked to register for an assigned presentation time prior to the event. Individuals who show up to the hearing without pre-registering will be allowed to present if there is available time.

Those presenting to the hearing will be able to present ideas, ask questions along with giving feedback.

Due to population growth, the provincial legislature will see its size increase to 87 seats.

The last Alberta’s Electoral Boundaries Commission in 2017 saw the city split roughly across river with the north side and a strip along the south banks joined with Redcliff, Brooks and the north end of Cypress County creating the riding of Brooks-Medicine Hat. The Cypress-Medicine Hat riding kept its name, was reduced in geographical size but maintained its population numbers by encompassing more city constituents. The Brooks-Medicine Hat riding currently has just short of 55,000 constituents with Cypress-Medicine Hat hosting a little less than 54,000.

Medicine Hat’s public hearing will take place from 9 am to noon at the TownePlace Suites at 7 Stober Bay, located around the corner from the Strachan Road Sobey’s.

More information is available at the Alberta Boundaries Commission website.
