Hat Woman Films Herself Kicking, Stomping Victim Gets Four Months Jail
A 25-year-old woman who took a cellphone video of herself kicking and stomping a victim in the head while taunting her received a four-month sentence Tuesday at Medicine Hat Court of Justice.
The video of Kayla Anthony was played in the court showing her victim laying prone on the ground while being repeatedly being beaten while the 25-year-old used a cellphone to film the attack.
The incident occurred on Aug. 17, 2023 with police being alerted to the altercation when a 911 call was made on Anthony’s phone.
The dispatcher alerted city police after hearing, “are you ok,” and “are you alive,” comments made prior to the call being disconnected.
The victim was found half naked, intoxicated and with a broken nose, five-inch laceration on her back and her left eye swollen shut.
The court heard the incident appeared to have been instigated by an attempt at reproachment by Anthony to the victim for a past disagreement between the two with text messages to that effect read out.
Anthony had previously plead not guilty but failed to show for her Sept. 9, 2024 trial.
She was subsequently arrested and remanded in custody until her guilty plea for aggravated assault on Tuesday.
In her statement to the court, Anthony said, “I’m. sorry. I handled things very, very poorly. . . It’ll never happen again.”
The court heard Anthony has availed herself of all available counselling services available during her month in custody and had no previous record of physical violence.
With credit for time served, Anthony will be required to spend a little more than two more months in custody and will be on probation for another year.
She was also given a 10-year weapons prohibition and will be required to provide a DNA sample.
Accused tells court to figure it out and get back to him
A man accused of assaulting and resisting a peace officer let his feeling be known in no uncertain terms during his appearance Tuesday.
Neil Christofferson, 40, told the court to, “do whatever the fuck you want,” during his bail hearing with the Crown opposing his release.
An agitated Christofferson indicated he felt he was being hassled by city police.
“You guys figure it out,” he told the court. “Get back to me when you have a punishment that fits the fucking crime.”
Following an adjournment, Christofferson returned to court and accepted advice to seek assistance from a lawyer prior to his next appearance on Wednesday.
