Robbery Leads to Standoff in Medicine Hat; pile of Firearms Recovered

In the early morning hours of July 16, 2025, Medicine Hat Police responded to a report of an armed robbery at a private residence in the 200 block of 8 Street SE. Officers from the Patrol Section acted swiftly, tracking the suspects to a nearby home in the 000 block of 11 Street SE, where they initiated a containment operation.

According to a statement from MHPS, the Major Crime Unit took over the investigation and executed a search warrant at the 11 Street SE residence later that day. Inside, investigators recovered five stolen firearms and personal items reportedly taken during the robbery.

A 34-year-old male has been arrested and is now facing sixteen charges, including robbery, break and enter, and multiple firearms-related offences. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.

MHPS confirmed the robbery was a targeted incident and reassured the public that no ongoing threat remains. “We remain committed to ensuring the safety of our community and will pursue all leads until this case is concluded,” said the official statement.

The standoff drew significant public attention on social media Wednesday, with local residents describing a heavy police presence in the area for several hours. One witness wrote on Facebook:

“It was a standoff. It started at 7 o’clock in the morning and lasted until 11:30 before noon. There was probably about eight or nine patrol vehicles, three police had their weapons drawn. EMS was on site.”

Other residents noted that Division Avenue was blocked off and officers were seen with weapons drawn near the gas station and water park area.

Additionally, a second residence near 8 Street and 2 Avenue SE was taped off and processed by forensic investigators, according to eyewitnesses.

Police have not confirmed the presence of additional suspects or whether further arrests are expected.
