Medicine Hat firefighters hit a quickly spreading grass fire fast and hard Saturday afternoon, extinguishing a blaze in Crescent Heights Saturday afternoon.

“It’s dry out there. You have to be careful. Until we get some moisture, you need to be extra careful,” said MHFD Capt. Scott Berg.

The fire broke out shortly before 3 pm just near the lookout point near the corner of 4th Ave. and 6th St. NE with MHFD responding within minutes of the blaze.

Smoke and flames could be seen across town as the fire expanded quickly along the top of the coulee ridge and moving into the goat path leading between Jefferies Trail and the intersection of Altawana and Parkview drives.

Berg is also reminding residents to adhere to city permitting processes when it comes to backyard burning.

Dry conditions have dominated the region over the past two weeks with last Sunday seeing an emergency alert issued in Cypress County after a grass fire threatened about a dozen homes off Range Road 40.
