Man Avoids Jail Time for Sharing Intimate Pix
A city man is avoiding jail following his guilty plea to sharing intimate photos of an individual on social media.
The initial disposition of the case was delayed from last week after questions were raised regarding the post-offence relationship between the victim and Matthew Ian Mahood, 34.
As was previously reported by the Owl, Mahood was initially charged following a March 29 incident in which two individuals were threatened with violence by the accused.
Mahood also had access to one of the individuals’ phones and social media accounts and threatened to share intimate images utilizing that access and subsequently did so.
Details that would identify the victim are under a statutory publication ban.
Mahood was alleged to have breached release conditions by being in the home of the victim who was at the centre of the allegations regarding the sharing of intimate images.
However, he told the court during his guilty plea last week that contact with the victim was consensual, leading to Thursday’s continuation of sentencing to determine the extent of the relationship between the two.
In follow up submissions, the court heard evidence that despite release conditions prohibiting contact, Mahood and the victim continued their relationship.
The Crown had been and was continuing to seek a three- to six-month period of jail for the substantive offence regarding the offence of non-consensual sharing of intimate images as well as the two breaches of conditions.
Defence lawyer Greg White sought a conditional sentence order to be served in the community along with pre-trail custody be credited against the breach charges.
Justice Ted Fisher agreed with White’s submissions, handing down an 18-month conditional sentence including strict conditions including periods of house arrest, curfew and that Mahood remove any and every photo he has of the victim from his personal devices.
Guilty plea to shoplifting incident involving bear spray, garage break in
A 20-year-old man entered guilty pleas offences relating to two incidents – one involving shoplifting in which bear-spray was deployed and another involving a theft from a Southwest Hill garage.
Kalan “Guppy” Malmgren entered guilty pleas to theft under $5,000 for the first incident and shopbreaking connected to the second as well as breach of conditions charges.
The court heard Malmgren was at a local dollar store on Dec. 28 when he was confronted by an employee for shoplifting with the 20-year-old deploying bear spray and fleeing the scene.
A vehicle connected to the shoplifting was subsequently stopped with Malmgren being taken into custody on suspicion of being connected with the incident. The man was later positively identified and sunglasses worn during the offence along with bear spray were recovered from the vehicle.
Subsequent to that incident, on March 23, 2025, a homeowner reported to police there were three individuals on the property.
Police responded and located Malmgren with the assistance of a drone while recovering a TV taken from the property.
Malmgren was sentenced to 90-days jail for the offences, time served due to pre-trial custody.
However, Malmgren continues to face a number of criminal charges connected to at least two more incidents.
He has entered not guilty pleas to two separate assault with a weapon allegations with trial dates yet to be set.
City police reported on May 14, Malmgren was seen by an individual known to him sleeping in a vehicle near Cresent Heights High School.
When the acquaintance checked on Malmgren, police say the man was attacked with a tool.
Later the same day, police allege Malmgren is alleged to have been involved in another incident in which a 39-year-old accused entered a home an attacked an individual. When the individual who was attacked fled the residence, a 20-year-old and 15-year-old are alleged to have deployed bear spray.
