Wason Wants to Move City Forward if Elected

Troy Wason says public safety is a big issue for Hatters and it’s a priority he’d like to see addressed if elected as a city councillor.

“It’s not just downtown,” he said of the issue. “It’s all over the city.”

Wason said growth is also something he’d like to see addressed as, “you don’t want to stand still, you want to make sure you are moving forward.”

He said he doesn’t necessarily feel like there are issues regarding transparency at city hall, highlighting the city’s Neat to Know postings on its website and social media.

“If (council) is in camera, I hope they are there for a reason,” Wason said. “(Transparency) isn’t something people having been saying to me. . .city hall is in a place where they are doing what they need to do.”

Wason said if he’s elected, he’d be bringing with him four decades of a strategic and organizational background experience.

“I know how things work, I’m a collaborative individual, I like to work people, I’m a team player and at the end of the day, that’s what I bring to the table,” he said.

When it comes to municipal politics, Wason said there isn’t a left side or right side.

“There’s a good solution – not always the best but the best one you can do at that particular time. That’s the approach I bring, is that I can come in with fresh ideas and really just be a team player,” he said.

As for what ideas he would bring to council, Wason said those would be developed with fellow council members, administration, business and non-profit communities along with other stakeholders and residents.

“What’s a big issue last year is not a big issue this year. Next year we’ll have a new one,” he said. “My way is just taking every individual issue and looking at all of the parameters and trying to build on that – that’s where I’m coming from.”

But with the dog days of summer still stretching its rays of sunshine across the city, Wason said he’s hearing from Hatters that things are a little slow on the political campaigning front.

“A lot telling me right now, ‘come see me in September,’” he said.

The candidate nomination period for the 2025 municipal election ends on Sept. 22.

The election will be held on Oct. 20.
