EDIT - Forever Canadian Petition Signing Will NOT Be Available Today At Protest Outside Justin Wright’s Office

EDITED - THE PETITION WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE TODAY FOR SIGNING.

The local group that has been protesting premier Danielle Smith’s policies for nearly half  a year will be collecting signatures for the Forever Canadian citizen initiative petition initiated by Thomas Lukaszuk. They will be on the sidewalk outside of Justin Wright’s office at 1299 TransCanada Way SE today from 10:30-11:30am. They are planning more signing opportunities.

The petition is for a policy proposal. The question reads as follows

Do you agree that Alberta should remain in Canada?


Each signature must be collected in person, no digital or online signatures. 

Each signature must be witnessed by a registered canvasser.

Each signature must be by an eligible voter.

Each canvasser must follow the Canvasser Code of Conduct which includes producing their canvasser ID issued by Elections Alberta upon request

Notable Dates

June 5 date of petition application

June 30 petition approved

July 30 petition released, signatures start being collected

Oct 28 deadline for signature collection

Signatures Required

 293,976 signatures are required (10% of the total number of all eligible voters contained in the post-election day list of electors from the 2023 Provincial General Election).

What Happens Next?

If the petition is unsuccessful, then no further action is required by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.

If the petition is successful, it is presented to the Legislative Assembly by the Speaker . The Assembly can then decide to introduce a bill to the Legislature to be voted on or they can decide to let it go to a referendum.

If the Assembly decides to hold a referendum, it must be held on or before the fixed date of the next general election (unless the election is less than one year away at which point it will be considered after that election but before the following fixed date election).
