On June 30 2025, Elections Alberta has approved Thomas Lukaszuk’s citizen initiative petition. This petition is to request the Province hold a referendum vote with the following question

Do You Agree That Alberta Should Remain In Canada?

On July 30, they were given the go-ahead to start collecting signatures. Signature collection has been ongoing in Edmonton and Calgary, other locations as being added as the signature collector credentials are being sent out.

This petition was started by Thomas Lukaszuk.  Lukszuk is a former deputy premier of Alberta under the Progressive Conservative Redford cabinet. He lost his seat in 2015.

This is the official website to sign up to be a canvasser/signature collector .

The campaign has a new FB page but the old one can be found here, now called the Elephant in the Room. This page says

Forever-Canadian is a group of Canadians living in Alberta from all ends of the political spectrum. It is about obtaining a referendum to allow the vast majority of Alberta residents to express their support for resisting all forms of separation, whether as a "51 State" or a "Commonwealth of Alberta".

On Aug 10, the new FB Page said

Elections Alberta had some glitches. They’re working hard to make this process smooth.

If you have waited more than 10 days for your credentials package in the mail, please re-register on our website as signature collector.

About the petition

The clock started ticking on July 30 2025. They have until October 28 2025 to collect 293,976 signatures (10% of the total number of all eligible voters contained in the post-election day list of electors from the 2023 Provincial General Election).

Doing the math

They have 90 days which means collecting over 3300 signatures per day.
100 signature collectors would have to collect 3000 signatures each, about 35/day.
500 signature collectors would need to collect 1500 signaurres each, about 20/day.
1000 signature collectors means each one would have to collect 300 signatures, about 4 /day.

Legal Requirements

Each signature must be collected in person, no digital or online signatures.

Each signature must be witnessed by a registered canvasser.

Each signature must be by an eligible voter.

More info on signatures and canvassers can be found here.

Each canvasser must follow the Canvasser Code of Conduct which includes producing their canvasser ID issued by Elections Alberta upon request.

Where to Sign in Medicine Hat

There is no place to sign in our area as of yet. We will update when the information becomes available.

Elections Alberta has been inundated with applicants for signature collection which is causing delays. It is expected they will begin collecting signatures this week. Some have already received their credentials.
