🎥🌬️🏚️Wind-Driven Collapsed Structure in Redcliff

Redcliff, Alberta

1400 block of Highway Avenue SE

A wood-framed building structure in the 1400 block of Highway Avenue SE suffered a near-total collapse following high winds and deteriorating site conditions, according to observations at the scene.

The collapse appears to have occurred during a Chinook wind event, when strong, sudden gusts moved through the area. The structure, in visibly poor condition, was found partially flattened and twisted, with framing bent and sections pressed into melting snow.

We saw wet ground conditions and deep muck surrounding the remains of the building. The foundation appeared to be totally fine, but the 2x4 framing was mostly on the floor when I arrived to look. Mud pulling at footwear as winds continued to buffet loose debris.

Strapping connected to the structure appears to have failed. It is unclear whether the strapping was intended to secure the building itself or other objects on the site. Nearby fencing was damaged and partially displaced, raising the possibility that it had been attached to, or relied upon, the failing structure for support.

The lot has been enclosed by a white-and-red temporary construction fence for more than a decade, according to signage and long-term residents familiar with the area. Signage bearing the local brand name Amron was visible on the fence at the time of the collapse.

No injuries were reported, and no emergency crews were observed on scene at the time of inspection. Just a blinking amber emergency light and some caution tape fluttering in the wind. Its unclear exactly when the collapse occurred or whether authorities have formally assessed the site yet. The first reports I saw were on Monday afternoon around 4pm

High winds during Chinook conditions are known to dislodge unsecured objects in southeastern Alberta. Each year, residents report items such as trampolines and temporary structures being lifted or blown across neighbourhoods during similar weather events.

The damaged structure appeared unoccupied and unfinished. Significant rebuilding or removal will likely be required before the site can be stabilized.

Amron will be contacted for comment regarding the fencing, signage, and any connection to the collapsed structure.
