Wind Chills to Reach 40 Below Tonight

Fahrenheit or Celsius, the temperature is the same.

We're facing extreme and dangerous wind chills of -40°C tonight. Yup, it's colder than a banker's heart.

In this weather, frostbite can happen in less than 10 minutes, and everyone is at risk, especially seniors and those living alone.

Please take a moment to check on your neighbors, friends, and family. A quick call or knock on the door to make sure they are warm and safe can make all the difference.

Let's look out for each other.

Environment Canada Weather Warning for the City of Medicine Hat

3:13 PM MST Thursday 22 January 2026

Courtesy of Environment Canada

Wind chill values of minus 40 to minus 45 will occur tonight. Temperatures and wind chills will likely moderate Friday afternoon, but wind chill values near minus 40 may return Friday night for a few communities.

A slow warming trend will begin this weekend.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Dress warmly.

Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Synthetic and wool fabrics provide good insulation.

If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.

Make sure your home is well-insulated, the heating system is working efficiently and cracks and drafts are sealed.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ABstorm@ec.gc.ca, call 1-800-239-0484 or post reports on X using #ABStorm. For more information about the alerting program, please visit: Colour-coded Weather Alerts.
