Recall Petition Against MLA Wright Fails

A recall petition against Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright fell well short as the deadline came and went earlier this week.

The petition required 13,150 signatures to trigger recall legislation but was only able to muster 2,087.

In a letter posted on Thursday, Wright called the effort was motivated by, “a small group of NDP activists,” whom were motivated by partisanship rather than concerns of constituents.

In her recall petition notice filed in December, organizer Holly Turnbull stated Wright has failed constituents by remaining silent on coal mining on the Eastern Slopes despite risks to water and agriculture.

The recall petition for Wright required 60 per cent of the votes cast during the last election with the effort garnering less than 10 per cent.

The recall petition results for fellow Medicine Hat MLA Premier Danielle Smith also failed earlier this month but garnered more signatures.

That petition resulted in 2,317 signatures but still fell well short of the more than 12,000 required.
